Tanugo

Tanugo is a free Japanese font that comes with two designs: hard corner (角) and rounded corner (丸). This font is the improved version over the previous free font that we introduced: Yusei Magic. While maintaining the same characteristic of a handwriting style font with permanent marker, Tanugo font is tidier, and more readable on smaller font sizes.

Tanugo font not only comes with two designs, each designs also comes with several font weights. The hard corner version has four weights while the rounded version has three. Best of all, the font is open-sourced and comes with extensive kanji character library. I would like to thank the font creator, Tanukizamurai, for your contribution!

Dela Gothic One is a free Japanese font featuring eye-catchy thick strokes that guarantees to capture everyone’s attention. Its thick and squarish character design makes this font sturdy and packs a lot of punch in it. Not only the Japanese character, the latin characters are exceptionally well done too. Because of its thick stroke nature, this font works very well in big displays, call-outs for posters, prints and signages.

Oshidashi M Gothic

Oshidashi M Gothic is a free Japanese font that the unique characteristics is at its contrast between the horizontal and vertical strokes. As you can see, the vertical strokes are thick, while the horizontal strokes are thin. The interesting part is the diagonally curved strokes where you can see the transition of the thicker strokes to thinner strokes.

Oshidashi M Gothic is an open-sourced font, and comes with extensive characters including more than 5000 kanji characters.

Futene

Futene is a free handwriting Japanese font created by an artist by the name of “Ikarinohi“. He/she created this font mainly is for own usage, however it has been released for free for everyone to download. The font style inherits the handwriting characteristics of the creator, a readable but yet not bound to the rigidness of the font design. But I do see some inconsistencies of the characters where some are more free form while some are tidier. Well when comes to creativity, who said it needs to be consistent all the time?

Futene comes with two font styles, with one with thicker weight. The font comes with roughly about 2000+ kanji characters, where unsupported characters will be replaced by the tofu character. You may download to try right now, however the creator mentioned in the post that he/she will be improving and updating the font soon. You may want to check back later for future update. The font is free to be used on commercial projects too.

BestTen

BestTen font is a free bitmap style Japanese font that brings back the memory of the days when we are using the old interfaces. Designed based on the 10×10 grid, the font comes with two styles: one called “Dot” which is the unmodified version with crisp edges, while another one, “CRT”, is slightly adjusted bitmap font that are mimicking the CRT display, where the character edges are rounded and the pixels on the characters are connected.

BestTen font comes with 7,200 characters, where the Hiragana, Katakana and Romaji characters are originally designed, while the rest are supplemented by an open-sourced font “PixelMPlus 10”, which was derived from the M+ Bitmap font. You can download and use it for personal and commercial projects.

Mochiy Pop One is a display style Japanese font that is free to download. It resembles the characters written by young girls in their 20s in Japan. It is suitable to be used in casual design styles for web and print creative designs.

Zero Gothic

Zero Gothic is another free font designed by Flop Design. Using the Source Han Sans as design base, the bold letters come with the shattered effect, thus giving a very impactful visual effect when viewing it. This font works well for large displays and for call-outs, and perhaps not suitable for body text as it’s difficult to read.

Yuji Boku is one of the digitalised handwriting fonts by the calligrapher Yuji Kataoka. Yuji Boku carries the carefree, naive and joyful design, which brings out the handwriting style of the young children.
